Weight Loss

Weight loss is almost everyone's list of New Year's resolutions. What if I told you that there is a product to help you lose FAT weight, not water weight?

Well, look no farther! With Zenith, this product is designed to reset leptin and adopenectin levels. Zenith is a clinically proven, patented formula that may accelerate fat loss by working through the body's Leptin System. This product gently decrease the Leptin levels to restore accurate communication between fat cells and the brain, allowing your brain to hear the "stop eating" and "burn fat messages. Made with no stimulants, eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts or wheat.

In an 8 week university conducted double-blind and placebo controlle study, participants on Zenith:

  • Lost 21.3 lbs of FAT (not water)
  • Lost 3.96 inches off ther waist
  • Reduced serum leptin levels by 43%

 Zenith may:

  • Help increase healthy fat lass
  • Help reduce serum Leptin
  • Help Increase serum adoponectin

Leptin is a hormone made by fat cells that regulated food intake and energy expenditure by communicating with the brain. It is the gatekeeper of fat metabolism. The more fat you have, the more negative messages are being sent to your brain, which causes leptin resistance.

Leptin resistance sabotages all dieting efforts, causing you to feel hungry and eat more even though your body has enough fat stores. This ignites a vicious cycle.

  •  Made with zero harmful stimulants.
  • Made of all natural polysaccharides and fatty acids
  • Safe for long-term weight loss plans
  • Manufactured in the USA.

At Freedom Health Shop we are proud to offer Zenith to help with your weight loss goals. The results were seen during the second month, so it is important to use it for a minimum of 2 months. The heavier you are, the longer you may need to use the product.

Mitochondrial Health

Do you suffer from endless fatigue, memory loss, muscle aches and digestive issues or other medical issues? As we start a new year, it is important to take a health inventory and your daily habits, and see where changes can be made. The first place to start is your diet. Is your diet loaded with processed foods? Do you eat a lot of gluten, dairy and corn? Over time, these repetitive habits can tax our gut, and ultimately our mitochondria. How about your exercise habits? Are you involved in regular muscle building activities? How is your sleep? All of these areas can affect your mitochondria.

If you remember from your 7th grade biology class, the mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. They are the organelles that generate 90% of all ATP (adenosine triphosphate) in the body by extracting energy from the foods that we eat and transform that energy through the electron transport chain and also cellular respiration.

The foods we eat have a direct affect on the mitochondria, and eating an un-healthy diet can cause cellular damage and make the mitochondria become less efficient or cause cellular death (aptosis). Having cellular dysfunction of the mitochondria is one of the markers of aging.

You can support your mitochondria several ways:

  1. Calorie Restriction- Helps to stimulate autophagy
  2. Exercise- Muscle cells need energy and one way to create more energy is for muscle cells to make more mitochondria, which increase ATP production
  3. Mitochondrial Nutrients- provides substrates and cofactors to stimulate mitochondrial activity and protect them from free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS)
  4. Sleep- The brain gets rid of toxic mitochondrial byproducts during sleep.
  5. Relaxation- Lowers stress hormones which have an effect on the mitochondria. Chronic stress can cause mitochondrial dysfunction.
  6. Sunlight- Produces Vitamin D which is necessary for mitochondrial activity.
  7. Infrared Light- Penetrates the skin that stimulates a molecule in the electron transport chain, which increases its efficiency and energy production.
  8. Cold Therapy- Creates shivering which which uses ATP for muscle contraction.Skeletal muscle produces heat through shivering, while brown adipose tissue (BAT) increase mitochondrial activity through non-shivering thermogenesis to help generate heat.
  9. Heat Therapy- Acts as a stressor to induce beneficial adaptive responses in the mitochondria.
  10. Support NAD+- NAD+ from Vitamin B3 is found in all cells of our body. This molecule is needed to help extract the electrons from food into the electron transport chain. Our NAD+ levels decline as we age, so supporting NAD+ is key to supporting longevity.

Two great articles that go into lots more depth are:

https://draxe.com/health/mitochondria/

https://drjockers.com/mitochondrial-health/

I high encourage you to read the articles listed above, as they contain some very valuable information!

As you can see, you truly are what you eat, and do. It's important to eat foods that are packed with nutrients to support your mitochondria. In America, with the Standard American Diet (SAD), we may be eating a lot, but eating empty calories with no nutritional value. When this happens, your mitochondria begin to become less efficient and may die as a result, which can cause excess fatigue. You could be eating, but literally starving your cells from lack of nutrients. This is also why as we age, we should be adding more strength training to our exercise routine, to build up our mitochondrial reserves.

If you need a little extra help, you may want to consider adding some mitochondrial supplements into your daily routine, to give your mitochondria the support they need. At Freedom Health Shop, we offer a few different formulations from K-Pax by Integrative Therapeutics, MitcoCore by OrthoMolecuar and ATP energy by Progressive Labs. In addition, we also offer NutraNMN by NutraNeeds, which supplements the body with NAD+. If you have any questions, you can always reach us at info@freedomhealthshop.com.

Wishing you a healthy start to the new year!

Time to Detoxify!

As we round out 2022, and journey into 2023, now is the time to start thinking about your health and what changes you would like to make going into the new year. For most, losing weight is a top priority. One way to help jump start that goal is through detoxification.

Besides our skin, the next biggest organ for detoxification is the liver. Our liver takes a beating, especially after the holidays, as it responsible for detoxifying all those items we take in by mouth, including fatty foods, sugar, alcohol and medications. Its main function is to convert those items into useable and un-usable part, and get those un-useable parts out of the system. Over time, our liver becomes less efficient and this is where toxins begin to accumulate in the body. One way to help the liver become more efficient, is to complete an elimination diet liver cleanse, several times a year, but especially after the holidays. Our bodies are so bombarded with toxins every day, so detoxifying 3 to 4 times a year, helps keep our body functioning at a more efficient level.

At Freedom Health Shop, we love Ortho Molecular's  7 Day or 14 Day Core Restore Program. The kit comes with either chocolate or vanilla powder and capsules to help support the liver. Before starting the program it is important to pull out all sugar, wheat (gluten), corn, daily, nuts, eggs, and focus on eating organic chicken/poultry, grass fed beef, wild caught fish and organic fruits and vegetables at least 1 week before starting the program, or it can cause flu like symptoms, tiredness, sluggishness to occur. By day 3 or 4 of the program, you will find that you have more energy, less brain fog, sleep better, and it some cases, weight loss begins to occur. By the time the cleanse is over, you usually feel so good, you want to continue the habits! While on the program, you make a shake for breakfast and dinner, and take capsules to help support the liver and promote elimination. You need to make sure that the elimination pathway is moving, because you do not want your body to re-absorb the the toxins that are being released. The kit also comes with a grocery list to help you purchase the right foods while on the cleanse, and some great recipes. You will get the best results from the cleanse if you take it seriously, and make an effort and plan it into your schedule. It takes planning, but it is so worth the results!

The Benefits of Fasting

As we indulge this Holiday Season, it is important to rid your body of all the toxins consumed from all the holiday Parties. One way to do this, is through fasting or intermittent fasting. The most efficient type of fast is to do a 3 day fast. Most people have trouble doing a 3 day fast, and some with certain medical conditions, should not fast for this long. Another alternative is intermittent fasting.

Intermittent fasting can be accomplished several different ways. Some  people do a12 hour fast, others do a sundown to sun up fast, but the most popular is a 16 or 18 hour fast, where all of the food consumed in a 6 or 8 hour window.

But, the question is, why should we fast? Fasting has so many health benefits but one the most important benefits being that it stimulates autophagy (pronounced a-tof-a-gee). But what is autophagy and why is it important?

The definition of autophagy is "self eating" or "self-digestion by a cell through the action of enzymes originating within the same cell." In layman's terms, autophagy is the "clean up crew." It is the process that the cells take to clean up the damaged cells from toxins, and cellular waste, in order to regenerate newer and healthier cells. Without autophagy, our body would not have a mechanism to remove dysfunctional cells and recycle them toward cellular repair. The purpose of autophagy is for the body to recycle and clean at the same time and act as a removal mechanism for cellular debris and toxins. Many of our holiday foods are fatty, and loaded with sugar and alcohol, which creates a lots of cellular toxicity.

Another major benefit of autophagy is its anti-aging benefit. Autophagy is the way that the body turns its clock back and create younger cells. When fasting and not eating, this causes cellular stress, which stimulates autophagy. It is a protection mechanism to protect our cells and enhance our lifespan. Years ago, when we were hunters and gathers, our body routinely went through autophagy as a survival mechanism. In this scenerio, autophagy keeps the body going by breaking down cellular material and reusing it for necessary processes. In today’s modern world, we tend to eat three meals a day, which means that our bodies are not going though autophagy like it should, meaning that our cellular repair mechanisms are decreased. Who determined that we should eat 3 times a day?

Another way to stimulate autophagy is by using the supplement Spermadine. Spermidine is a compound that our body makes a lot of when we are young, but the levels wane with age. Spermidine is made from wheat gernm and when taken daily, it helps stimulate autophagy. Freedom Health is proud to be bringing this exciting compound to our shop! We will be writing more articles soon on this incredible compound!

Some other benefits of fasting include:

  • Helps in Weight loss and Boosts Metabolism
  • Increase Brain Health.
  • Promotes Sugar Control by Reducing Insulin Resistance
  • Fights Inflammation
  • Enhances Heart Health by improving Blood Pressure, Trigycerides, and Cholesterol Levels
  • Increase Growth Hormone Secretion
  • May Extend Longevity
  • May Aid in Cancer Prevention

Some of the most common ways to fast are:

  • Water fasting: Involves drinking only water for a set amount of time.
  • Juice fasting: Entails only drinking vegetable or  fruit juice for a certain period.
  • Intermittent fasting: Intake is partially or completely restricted for a few hours up to a few days at a time and a normal diet is resumed on other days.
  • Partial fasting: Certain foods or drinks such as processed foods, animal products, or caffeine are eliminated from the diet for a set period.
  • Calorie restriction: Calories are restricted for a few days every week.

Within these categories are also more specific types of fasts.

For example, intermittent fasting can be broken down into subcategories  such as alternate-day fasting, which involves eating every other day, or time-restricted feeding, which entails limiting intake to just a few hours each day

To get started, try experimenting with different types of fasting to find what works best for you.

Berberine

Berberine is not just another pretty plant, but it has been a part of Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Research over the years has shown that berberine can help in diabetes, obesity, inflammation and gut health.

Berberine has also shown to have some antibacterial activity against Staphlococcus aureus, and that it has the ability to damage the DNA and proteins of bacteria such as Streptococcus agalactiae.

Because the underlying issue in most disease is related to inflammation, and berberine can help decrease inflammation, it may be useful in diabetes and other inflammatory health conditions. In addition, some studies have shown a benefit on blood sugar, triglycerides, LDL reduction and insulin. Since metabolic syndrome is characterized by obesity (fat around the abdomen, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and high cholesterol, berberine may be useful in metabolic syndrome. One report showed that people who took 750mg of barberry twice a day for 3 months has significant decrease in weight. Another study showed that 200mg of barbarry three times a day decreased body mass index (BMI). Barbarry is a plant with a high amount of berberine.

Another study showed that berberine may activate brown adipose tissue. This is important, because as we age, we lose brown fat and it gets replaced with white fat. Brown fat is thermogenic , i.e., heat producing, which is important in metabolism. Increased activation of brown fat may help treat obesity and metabolic syndrome. Berberine is capable of activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) which is often referred to as the "metabolic master switch" and it plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism.

Berberine has also shown some benefit in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is characterized by high insulin levels, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. Typically metformin is used in COS, but berberine may be the alternative to metformin.

Other studies have shown promise in regards to cancer. The thought is that berberine has inhibitory effects on certain types of cancers, and may interfere with with the progression of cancer by helping to induce cel death. So far, most o these studies are in the lab, not in people, but it may show promise in the cancer fighting arena.

Berberine has also been helpful in gut health. Because berberine has antimicrobial activity, the theory is that it may remove harmful bacteria in the gut, thus allowing heathy bacteria to thrive. It is also thought that berberine helps support anf maintain healthy respiratory tract mucus membranes.

Some common side effects of berberine are stomach upset, nausea, cramping, diarrhea, flatulence, and constipation.

A common dose range is 900-1500mg per day and should be divided into 2-3 doses. A common dose for berberine is 500mg three times a day, taken with a meal or shortly thereafter. As always, check with your healthcare provider before starting a new supplement, especially if you have underlying medical conditions.

Curcumin and It's Benefits

Curcumin is the bioactive ingredient in turmeric, a popular spice used in cooking, and in religious rituals but its star quality is in its many health benefits. Curcumin provides antioxidants and polyphenols that support cellular function. To truly heal, we must pay attention to cellular mechanisms. If the cell is not functioning properly, it will eventually translate into symptoms, and many underlying "dis-eases" are tied to underlying inflammation. The goal is to turn the body's inflammation down, and this is where turmeric or curcumin shines!

Some of its health benefits include:

  • Reducing oxidative stress
  • Supporting cell function
  • Supporting the joints and helps reduce the inflammatory response. May be helpful in osteoarthritis.
  • Maintaining digestive health
  • Promoting skin and eye health
  • Promoting neuro protective activity in the brain

Curcumin can be poorly absorbed, so it is important to to look for products to help its absorption. Look for products with black pepper as an ingredient, or one with a phospholipid to help its absorption. If using a raw turmeric material, look on the label that it contains at least 95% curcuminoids. Also, make sure that your supplements do not have any un-necessary fillers, like magnesium stearate, or dibasic calcium phosphate, as these may interfere with the absorption of nutrients or essential minerals, or may trigger allergic reactions (polysorbate 80).

A good way to get turmeric is to add to your food, teas, and use supplements if needed. Below are a couple great articles from Dr. Mercola MD, and Adrian Den Boer, ND regarding tumeric/curcumin:

EPA vs DHA

There have been much controversy regarding the ration of EPA to DHA in Omega 3 supplements. New research is showing that DHA may be more favorable in lowering blood pressure and improving vascular and platelet function than EPA. For a long time, the thought was that EPA:DHA should be in a 3:2 or 2:1 ratio, but that thought is changing based on new information, favoring higher DPA levels.

For a great discussion on EPA versus DPA in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, read the article below by Thomas Guilliams from LifeStyle Matrix for the most recently information on this topic!

Tom Guilliams, PhD on EPA versus DHA

For the most part, EPA and DHA have been considered to have similar health benefits; therefore, the various dosing recommendations usually describe a combination of the two (EPA plus DHA), without differentiation. However, over the past decade a number of studies have shown both mechanistic and clinically-relevant differences between these two similar fatty acids, leading to potential targeted therapeutic uses for each. In some cases, there are head-to-head comparisons between the two in clinical trials; in other cases, there are epidemiological or basic science discoveries that are driving clinical focus on one fatty acid over the other for particular health concerns.

It is often thought that EPA and DHA have identical benefits in preventing cardiovascular risk, and since commercial products often have higher EPA concentrations, many simply assume that EPA must be of greater benefit. However, Mori and Woodman concluded back in 2006 that: “The data in humans suggest that

Future studies will need to carefully assess the independent effects of EPA and DHA on other clinical and biochemical measures before decisions can be made with respect to dietary supplements and the fortification of foods with either EPA or DHA.”1

A systematic review, published in 2018 has concluded nearly the same thing: “Both EPA and DHA lowered triglyceride concentration, with DHA having a greater triglyceride-lowering effect. Whilst total cholesterol levels were largely unchanged by EPA and DHA, DHA increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration, particularly HDL, and increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentration and LDL particle size. Both EPA and DHA inhibited platelet activity, whilst DHA improved vascular function and lowered heart rate and blood pressure to a greater extent than EPA.”2 Below we will explore the data behind these statements, detailing the available evidence which suggest the superiority of DHA for cardiovascular risk prevention.

Triglyceride (TG) Reduction: One of the most consistent lipoprotein marker changes resulting from consumption of EPA and DHA preparations is the reduction in fasting and post-prandial serum TG. Approved omega-3 pharmaceutical products are indicated only for severe hypertriglyceridemia (TG > 500 mg/dl). In general, both EPA and DHA (and combination products) reduce fasting TG by up to 50%, which is both dose-dependent and influenced by baseline TG levels (higher baseline TG results in greater potential reduction). 3  When compared head-to-head, DHA appears to have a greater ability to lower TG levels, though the differences between DHA and EPA are often not statistically different.4

LDL, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol: There is much controversy surrounding the ability of fish oil supplement to affect LDL-C and HDL-C levels; especially related to their ability to raise LDL-C. Research shows that DHA supplementation raises both HDL-C and LDL-C, though it does not increase non-HDL-C. These changes in both HDL-C and LDL-C appear to be greater where TG-lowering is greatest. [Allaire],5 Since the increase in LDL-C does not translate to higher non-HDL-C, this is likely the result of shifting cholesterol from VLDL particles to LDL and HDL particles, which then shifts LDL particles toward a larger and less atherogenic phenotype (see discussion below on particle size changes). The increase in LDL-C (and HDL-C) after DHA supplementation should therefore be viewed as metabolically favorable and indicative of a shifting of lipids away from the triglyceride-rich VLDL particles.

Tom Guilliams Faculty member

Lipoprotein Particle Size: Combinations of EPA and DHA have been shown to favorably alter lipoprotein particle size: increasing both LDL and HDL particle sizes as well as decreasing VLDL particle size. When EPA and DHA are compared with respect to their ability to improve HDL particle size, DHA-rich oils show more consistent improvements.6 This may be due to the fact that DHA has a greater inhibition of cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) activity, one of the enzymes responsible for altering lipoprotein particle size.7 DHA, but not EPA was capable of increasing LDL particle size in treated hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients as well as overweight hypercholesterolemic subjects.5 ,8

Hypertension: Omega-3 fatty acids have shown modest improvements in both blood pressure measurements and endothelial function, particularly in hypertensive patients.9, 10,11 In animal and human studies, DHA supplementation had a more significant impact on reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure than did EPA supplementation.12 DHA also showed more improvement on endothelial function in these patients.13 Both EPA and DHA improve arterial compliance. 5,14

Heart Rate: An increased heart rate is an independent risk factor for CVD mortality. In a study comparing DHA to EPA in their ability to affect heart rate; DHA was able to lower heart rate in overweight hyperlipidemic men while EPA was not.5 Other studies have shown similar superiority of heart rate lowering using DHA as compared to EPA. 15, 16

Conclusion and Recommendation: While many advocates of omega-3 fatty acid therapy have suggested that products containing a 3:2 or 2:1 ratio of EPA:DHA are the most appropriate for CVD prevention and treatment, the data in humans suggests otherwise. In nearly every surrogate marker in which EPA or DHA results differ, there is evidence to suggest that DHA is superior to EPA. While no large clinical trial has been performed that distinguishes these differences in hard end-points (MI, CVD mortality), among post-menopausal women with atherosclerosis (detected by coronary angiography) followed for over 3 years, serum DHA levels above the median were statistically correlated with reduced atherosclerotic progression and fewer lesions.17 Neither EPA nor ALA  levels showed any correlation with changes in atherosclerotic progression. This corresponds to other epidemiological data showing DHA levels to be more closely tied to reducing risk compared to other fatty acids, including EPA.18, 19 Research has also recently shown that when consuming equal doses of EPA or DHA, the omega-3 index increases to a greater extent in those consuming DHA.20

Therefore, for both primary prevention in patients with increased CVD risk and secondary CVD prevention, we believe there is enough evidence to suggest that clinicians who use omega-3 fatty acid therapy should recommend products with a higher content of DHA than EPA (though not necessarily DHA-alone).  When omega-3 fatty acid therapy is being recommended for general health in patients with low risk for CVD, choosing an EPA:DHA ratio which reflects other desired outcomes (e.g., depression, eye health etc.) is likely to reduce cardiovascular risk as well.

STRESS

All of us have felt stress one time or another. Life can be very stressful between job, kids, parents, siblings and relationships and sometimes we get overwhelmed. When this happens, our body's normal defense, can get overloaded and stay in an "on" position. During times of normal stress, our body will respond by activating the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). When the SNS is activated it stimulates the release of stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol activating the "flight or fight" response. When the stress is over, the body will activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) to help it return to its normal state. The problem is, when there is prolonged stress, the SNS remains activated. This continued release of stress hormones like cortisol can create lots of downhill effects such as chronic fatigue, weakened immune systems, diabetes, mental health issues, cardiovascular disorders.

Under normal circumstances, cortisol and adrenaline have many health benefits to maintain homeostasis. Cortisol helps in the flight or fight response by helping manage blood pressure and heart function, reduce inflammation, break down sugar along with insulin, helps manage the metabolism of protein, carbohydrates and fat, and assists in the morning wake cycle. Like cortisol, when adrenaline is released it causes the body to increase heart rate and blood pressure, increase breathing rate, releases glucose and fats from liver storage sites and causes fat breakdown. All of these effects helps the body to prepare to escape the the stressful situation.

Prolonged stressful situations can also cause hormonal imbalances, since cortisol is in the same pathway as steroids. This means that estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone levels can all be affected.

Another player hormone in the stress cascade is glucagon. Glucagon is a hormone that tells your liver to release glycogen. Glycogen is made up of many glucose molecules, and when it is released from the liver it is broken down into glucose molecules to increase blood sugar for increased energy levels. Glucagon is stimulated to be released by several triggers such as low blood sugar levels, high protein meals and adrenaline stimulation.

All of these hormones are meant to be kept in check and the body has mechanisms in place to maintain homeostasis. When the system becomes overloaded it can cause prolonged exposure to all these hormones. The result of the prolonged stress can cause anxiety, depression, fatigue, irritability, constipation or diarrhea, upset stomach, headaches, aches and pains, memory loss, loss of concentration, stiff neck, heart disease, high blood pressure.

There are vitamins and herbal supplements that can be used to help support the stress response. Some of thee are considered adaptogens, which are a class of healing plants, certain foods and herbs, that are now used in herbal products in capsules, powders and tinctures. Adaptogens help balance and protect the body, by helping your body respond to a stressor and helping to maintain homeostasis through the HPA Axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) which controls the release of many of the hormones, including cortisol.

Some adaptogenic herbs that may help balance stress include:

  • Panax Ginseng
  • Holy Basil
  • Ashwagandha
  • Astragalus Root
  • Licorice Root
  • Rhodiola
  • Cordycep Mushrooms
  • Schisandra Berry
  • Tumeric

Vitamins that may help maintain stress levels:

  • B Vitamins

In addition, to reduce stress it is important to incorporate non-drug therapies too, like sleeping 7-9 hours per night, exercising, making good food choices, and using infrared sauna therapy.

Quercetin and Covid
by Thorne Research

Quercetin phytosome can decrease COVID risk

Quercetin is taking center stage in the era of COVID. An increasing amount of research is showing quercetin, along with several other key nutrients, including vitamins C and D and zinc, can provide significant benefit. This is the most recent of several studies that show the benefit of quercetin for COVID-related issues.

In 120 health-care workers, 60 received 250 mg quercetin phytosome (QP; the amount in one capsule of
Thorne’s Quercetin Phytosome) twice a day for three months, while the other 60 participants received a placebo. During the 3-month study, participants were tested for COVID once every three weeks. During the study, one of 60 in the QP group and four of 60 in the placebo group contracted COVID. In addition, the person in the QP group who contracted COVID during the study had complete resolution of symptoms in seven days; whereas, the placebo group experienced symptom resolution in an average of 15 days. Although this study was recently published, it was conducted prior to the availability of vaccines; therefore, there was no data regarding vaccine status.

How to Stay Healthy

As we approach the Fall season, it is important to be healthy and stay healthy. The most important ways to stay healthy are proper nutrition, sleep and exercise. However, our food supply is has been corrupted, and the nutrients in the soil have been so depleted in the last 50 years, that it is nearly impossible to get the needed nutrients to keep your body running efficiently. That's why we need to supplement with vitamins and nutrients to keep our engines running. Let's take a look at a few of the key ingredients to look for in this upcoming cough and cold season:

  • Vitamin D- Do you know your Vitamin D level? Vitamin D is one of the most important hormones for your body, as Vitamin D can help boost immunity and help your body respond more efficiently when exposed to viruses. This is a must for year round health. Keeping your Vitamin D level between 40ng/ml and 60ng/ml. Other health car providers set the upper limit at 80ng/ml. In either case, it's best to know your baseline level, and have your levels tested twice a year. Best to used daily for daily maintenance.

  • Vitamin C- Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that is useful for maintaining immunity, and helping to boost immunity during the cold and flu season. There are also some studies showing its usefulness in cancer therapies. The RDA for Vitamin C are 90mg (adult males), 75mg (adult females), 85mg (pregnancy) and 120mg (lactation). Most vitamin C sold is from 100-2000mg per tablet/capsule. The maximum tolerable upper limit dose is 2000mg per day. The concern is diarrhea and other GI effects in doses greater than 2000mg. Vitamin C is not well absorbed, and in doses of 1000mg/day, only about 50% is absorbed. One way around this is to use Liposomal Vitamin C to boost its absorption. Some practitioners do use higher doses than 2000mg per day and use GI symptoms to help gauge the upper limit. If you are prone to kidney stones, you may want to be more conservative on the dose. Best used for daily maintenance.
  • Quercetin- It is one of the most abundant flavonoid antioxidants in the diet and found in fruits, vegetables, grains. It also may help boost immunity, reduce inflammation, allergy symptoms and blood pressure. Antioxidants help bind free radicals which is the cause of many chronic conditions. For general health use, a dose of 250mg/day is useful for maintaining health. During illness, 500mg/day can be used. Doses higher than 500mg/day can be used in other medical conditions. Best used for daily maintenance.
  • N-Acetyl-Choline (NAC)- NAC is the medication that is used to protect the liver from Tylenol overdose. NAC is a precursor to glutathione, a compound that your body makes to help eliminate substances (and drugs) from your body. It is also helpful in reducing respiratory secretions, and thus is helpful during the cold season. Helpful doses for maintaining immunity are 500mg-100mg per day. Best used at first sign of illness. Can also be used for maintenance.
  • Zinc- Zinc is a nutrient that helps support the immune system and promote wound healing. For years zinc lozenges were sold over the counter to help support the immune system when cold symptoms start, and it helped to shorten the length of illness. Zinc can be found in many foods, like beans, meat and fish, snd pumpkin seeds. The challenge is zinc does not penetrate the cell very well, but when paired with Vitamin C, the amount that reaches into the cell increases. If you are going to supplement with zinc, then make sure to take Vitamin C along with it, to get the best results. Also, ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, two prescription medications, are zinc ionophores, meaning that they help the zinc enter the cell. This was a powerful combination that health care professionals used to help patients support their immune system in Covid19. It is also important to supplement with a mutltivitamin containing copper, as zinc can deplete copper stores. People need at least 15mg per day of zinc, and when ill, doses of 25mg-100mg have been used to support the immune system. Best used for maintenance, but can be increased during illness to boost the immune system.
  • Black Seed Oil (Nigella Sativa)- Black seed oil is from the plant Nigella sativia and it has been used for centuries as a spice or as a herbal medicine. The most promising research with black seed oil is its use in multi-drug resistant bacteria. Black seed oil has 3 key phytonutrients: thmoquinone (TQ), thymohydroquinone (THQ) and thymol, which each have specific benefits. Black seed oil comes as a liquid, but sometimes the taste can be very strong. For those who don't like liquids, they are also made in capsule form for easier use. When using to help boost your immune system doses of 500mg-2000mg per day have been used. It is best used when you first become ill and used for 5-10 days. Some people do use it black seed oil daily for other conditions.
  • Oregano- This is truly a powerhouse herb! Oil of Oregano contains two powerful compounds- carvacrol and thymol, both of which studies have shown to have strong antibacterial and antifungal properties. Along with black seed oil, oregano oil has powerful activity against microbes and can help manage digestive issues, plus many other issues. Not only is it yummy on pizza or in Italian food, but it is good for your health! Oregano comes in in oil and capsules. It also comes as a nose sprays to help clear the sinuses! The oil can be strong, and some may find it hard to consume in drop format. In this case, the capsules may be easier to tolerate. Some people use oregano oil daily, to boost their immunity, or it can be used at the first sign of illness for 5-10 days.
  • Elderberry- Elderberry (Sambucus) has been around for centuries and has been used for many health benefits including sinus issues, inflammation, allergies and a whole host of other benefits. Even Hippocrates, the Greek known s the "Father of Medicine" widely described elderberry as his "medicine chest"because of all the health benefits. Research in the Journal of International Medicine suggests that when elderberry is used in the first 48 hours on symptom onset, the plant may help shorten the duration of colds and flu. For this reason, the government actually touted the use of elderberry to fight the flu during the 1995 flu pandemic! Elderberry is also known as an effective herbal allergy remedy. Research suggest that elderberry can help improve the immune function and calm inflammation, which can help provide allergy relief. Elderberry comes as teas, syrups and is found in combination capsules. Elderberry should not be used in pregnant and nursing mothers, or in people with autoimmune disease, like rheumatoid arthritis, since it may stimulate the immune system. Please discuss with your health care provider if you are on diabetes medications, diuretics, chemotherapy, immunosuppressants, laxatives, and theophylline.
  • Andrographis- This is a remarkable plant that has been used for centuries in Asia for a range of issues and is known in India as "Indian Echinacea.". It is also an important element in 26 Ayurvedic formulas, and today it is used for its antiviral activity for respiratory conditions. Some of the benefits that the herb may help include fever reduction, inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, help manage symptoms of colds and flu, including sore throat and cough. Andrographis also helps boost immunity and works as an antioxidant, helping protect the body from oxidative damage. Popular forms of andrographis include capsules, tinctures and teas. There is no single recommended dose , but some suggest a reasonable dosing regimen is 300mg four times a day for the first few days of cold symptoms. It is best used at the first signs of symptoms.
  • Astragalus- Astragalus is a plant within the legume family, with a history of immune boosting capacities. It is classified as an adaptogen, (helps the body fight stress and disease) and has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. The roots of the plants are the only parts used medicinally, and they contain saponins, flavanoids and polysaccharides. Saponins help boost the immune system, flavanoids help scavenge free radicals and polysaccharides have the antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities. Astragalus has many benefits including boosting the immune system, having antioxidative effects, and having anti-inflammatory effects amongst a whole host of other benefits. Because of its antiviral effects, astragalus has been used in colds and flu. It is commonly used in combination with other herbs like ginseng and licorice as natural cold remedies. It seems to work better when used regularly to prevent illness, so it is a great option maintenance during the fall and winter months. It is sometimes paired with other agents to be used in the first few days of illness.
  • Echinacea- Echinacea is a flower that has been used as a traditional herbal remedy for more than 400 years by the Great Plains Indian tribes,  and it is one of the top selling herbs, because of its benefits in overall immune support.  Prior to 1950, echinacea held esteemed medical status, until antibiotics came into existence. There is evidence that some of the components of echinacea has the ability to reduce viral infections, thus its wide popularity as a natural cold remedy. Echinacea contains echinacein, which has the ability to inhibit bacteria and viruses from entering healthy cells, thus helping the body's immune system against foreign invaders.  The plant also has flavonoids, inulin, polysaccharides and Vitamin C. In Germany dietary supplements are regulated, and the above ground part of Echinacea purpurea species is recognized as a natural remedy for preventing and treating urinary tract infections, upper respiratory infections, colds, and slow healing wounds. The NIH says that daily use is beneficial for immune support and overall health. Other sources claim that Echinacea is most effective when taken as soon as cold symptoms appear, and taken many times a day for 7 to 10 days and to be discontinued after a maximum of 14 days. Normal doses are 800mg three to four times daily of the capsules, but always follow the directions on the bottle, or as directed by your health care provider. Many times echinacea will be paired with goldenseal or added immune boosting protection.
  • Goldenseal- Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is has been around for centuries and was used by the Native Americans for various health conditions including skin disorders, ulcers and sexually transmitted diseases. Today, it is one of the top five selling herbs in the Unites States, and it has been used in cold prevention, respiratory infection, allergies, eye infections, urinary tract infections, digestive issues and many more conditions. Goldenseal contains the active component berberine, which has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and blood glucose lowering effects. When goldenseal is paired with echinacea, it has incredible immune boosting activity and is a great support during upper respiratory challenges. It comes as tea or capsule form, and can be paired with other agents. Goldenseal should not be taken for longer than 3 weeks without a break of 2 weeks between each use. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding woman. People with high blood pressure, liver or heart issues should consult their health care provider before taking Goldenseal.
  • Mushroom Beta Glucan- Beta-Glucan is a glucose polymer which is found in the cell walls of certain plants, bacteria, fungi and yeasts. Beta- Gucan can be consumed by eating whole grains, mushrooms, yeasts, seaweeds and algae, but they can also be obtained from supplements. Beta-Glucan has many health benefits improving blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure, supporting the immune system plus a host of other benefits. For immune boosting, Beta-Glucans appear to work by stimulating the immune functions, such as activation of monocytes/macrophages and increased production of immunoglobulin, NK cells, and killer T-cells. Mushroom Beta-Glucan can be purchased by itself, but can be also be paired with other agents for immune boosting activities. Doses may vary. Best if used for prevention, but you may see them in combination with other ingredients meant to be used at first sign of illness. Beta-Glucans have been shown to reduce the occurrence and duration of upper respiratory tract infections.

All of these compounds are useful for maintaining your immune system. It is important to have these items BEFORE you need them, so that you can help boost your immune system quickly when you need to. Some of these items can also be used daily for maintenance. At Freedom Health Shop we carry all of these compounds, and some are sold separately, or sold in combination products. Echinacea and Its Uses

As we approach cough and cold season, it is important to keep your immune system healthy. Echinacea, is one of the most popular herbs that can be use to boost your immune system. Echinacea has been used over the centuries by the Native Americans to treat many aliments, such as pain, inflammation, migraines, urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast infections and many more uses. Today, echinacea is used mostly to treat colds and flu. Most medical studies use extracts or combination of root and herb extracts like Echinacea purpurea, angustifolia or pallida species. Both the plant's upper parts and roots are used in tablets, tinctures, extract, and teas.

Echinacea can be used to help recover from upper respiratory infections, such as the common cold or flu. Recent information also shows that it may be useful in treating SARS-Cov infections. To be most effective, echinacea must be started when symptoms first appear and used for 7-10 days. Echinacea appears to have indirect antiviral activity, possibly by stimulating interferon-like effects. Echinacea's mechanism helps stimulate phagocytosis and increases lymphocyte activity, possibly by promoting the release of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-1(IL-1), and interferon. The key is to start treatment early- as soon as symptoms start.

The dosage used can vary depending on the formulation, so it's best to check the directions on the bottle, or ask your health care professional. Always look for reputable manufactures, without un-necessary fillers and binders, and preferably organic, non-GMO, no gluten. Some dosage guidelines used for boosting immunity in adults are:

Dry Powered extract: 300-500mg of Echinacea purpurea three time a day.

Liquid Extract tinctures: 2.5ml three times a day, or up to 10 mls daily.

Theoretically, echinacea may interfere with immunosuppressant therapy because of its immunostimulating activity. Patients who have underlying allergic conditions (atophy- a sensitivity reaction associated with Immunoglobulin E -like eczema, allergic rhinitis and asthma)  may be more likely to experience an allergic reaction. Individuals sensitive to the Asterceae/ Compositae plant family (ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies and other herbs) may be more likely to experience an allergy reaction to echinacea. Potential side effects, which are most commonly seen in people with allergies to the Asterceae family, include:

  • Skin rashes
  • Itchy skin
  • Swelling
  • Stomach upset/ nausea
  • Shortness of breath

Women who are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, should avoid using echinacea. High doses of echinacea can cause insomnia, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and dizziness

Echinacea's benefits include:

  • High in antioxidants
  • Helps immune system combat infections, viruses and may help you recover more quickly from illness.
  • May lower blood sugar levels
  • May reduce feelings of anxiety
  • Contains anti-inflammatory properties
  • May help reduce skin issues, such as acne, eczema and help improve skin hydration and reduce wrinkles.
  • May suppress cancer cell growth and trigger cancer cell death

Omega 3's

Omega 3's are important essential polyunsaturated fatty acids  that you must get from your diet. Your body does not have the ability to produce them, thus they are "essential" meaning that you must get them from your diet.

The three most important types are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). ALA is found mostly in plants and DHA and EPA are in animal foods and some algae.

There are some foods that are high is omega-3's including fatty fish like mackrel, fish oils, chia seeds, flaxseed oil and walnuts, krill oil and cod liver oil. These omega 3's are important for your body and brain. (Ever notice that walnuts look like a brain?Hmmm.. . could it be by design that they are useful to power the brain?)

Of the three types mentioned above, ALA is the most common and is used for energy. It can also be converted to EPA and DHA; however the body does not convert ALA well into these active forms. Foods high in ALA are flax seeds and oil, canola oil, chia seeds, walnuts and hemp seeds. ALA is also found in soybeans.

EPA is mostly found in animal products, such as fatty fish, fish oil. Some micoralgae also contain EPA. The body can also convert EPA to DHA.

DHA is the most important omega 3 fatty acid. It is integral to the brain, and the retina. It is also important in pregnant and breastfeeding women for the developmental health of the baby. DHA is also found in fatty fish and fish oils, meat, eggs and dairy. Vegetarians and vegans may lack DHA and should consider supplementation to get enough of this omega-3.

It is also important to consider the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. Both play important roles in the body and are used to produce signaling molecules, eicosanoids, which have various roles in inflammation and blood clotting. Omega 3's are anti-inflammatory, while some omega-6 fatty acids can promote inflammation. In most western diets, we consume too much omega-6 fatty acids, and some resource say that the American diet contains 15-20 times more omega-6 fatty acids that omega-3 fatty acids.

There are different types of omega-6 fatty acids, and not all promote inflammation. Most omega-6 fatty acids come from vegetable oils, such as linoleic acid (LA)- (not to be confused with ALA, and omega-3 fatty acid) Primary sources of omega-6 fattsy acids are corn, soy, canola, safflower and sunflower oils, which are in excess in our diets.  Linoleic acid is converted to gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in the body, which can be broken down further to arachidonic acid (AA), which could contribute to inflammation, blood clotting and blood vessel constriction. GLA can be found in plant based oil, including evening primrose oil (EPO), borage oil and black currant seed oil. Foods high in omega- include tofu, walnuts, safflower oil, sunflower seeds, walnut oil, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, peanut butter, chicken thighs, and avocados.

GLA may reduce inflammation, and most of the GLA supplementation is converted to DGLA, that helps fight inflammation. Having enough magnesium, zinc and vitamins C, B3 and B6 helps to promote GLA to DGLA.

Some experts state that we consume a ratio of Omega-6 to Omega of 15:1 or 20:1 which is higher than needed. Most people lack the EPA/DHA which is found in the Omega-3's. According to Dr. Mercola the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is 1:1. In the past, measuring a person's nutritional status depended on analyzing a person's food journal and cross referencing the journal entries with a database of food nutrients to determine nutritional status. This is a crude estimate, as it doesn't take food proportions, digestion, absorption issues as well as accuracy of the entries. However, there is a biomarker- O3I for omega-3 nutrient status, which has shown to be a measure of overall health risk and is tied to food-derived omega-3 intake. O3I describes the percentage of EPA and DHA fatty acids with the red blood cells. and it is a measure of long-term absorption and tissue deposition of Omega-3 fatty acids. Gut Health

Did you know that the condition of your gastrointestinal health is important to your overall health? We take our stomachs for granted, and consume un-healthy diets that can cause destruction to our intestinal tract. Within the entire intestinal tract, live millions of beneficial bacteria, that help us break down food and help absorb vitamins minerals and nutrients. When these bacteria are out of balance, our bodies allow the "bad" bacteria to thrive. When this happens, it can trigger a whole host of events from bacterial overgrowth, changed pH in the stomach, and damage to the intestinal lining. In addition, stress can also trigger changes in our gastrointestinal tract through hormonal changes.

The lining in our stomach is only one cell layer thick and right below that layer lies approximately 70% of the immune system! When that layer becomes damaged from poor diet, or taking too many proton pump inhibitors (like Prilosec- which changes the acidity of the stomach) we can set ourselves up for many issues like absorption issues, gassiness, diarrhea, constipation bloating, ulcers, bacterial overgrowth and autoimmune disorders.

For a great article from the NIH on proton pump inhibitors and Clostridium Difficile infection, click the link below:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5051091/

Often, these conditions begin from "leaky gut syndrome", which results from partially digested food passing through the one cell layer thick membrane. Under normal circumstances, the stomach acid and the enzymes released from or salivary glands in the mouth should break down our food into easily absorbable particles. The breakdown of food starts in the mouth and stomach. These particles then pass into the small intestine where they are absorbed through the membrane, and then into the blood stream. When partially un-digested food is not broken down properly, more food will be lost in the stool, and we fail to fully absorb absorb the nutrients from our food, which can set us up for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. If the gut is leaky, and there are "holes" in the lining of the alimentary canal, then this un-digested food can pass through these holes. On the other side of the membrane, is the immune system, and the immune system does not recognize these partially broken down pieces of food, so it begins attacking the body. This is how some forms of autoimmunity can start, and it's beginning is from having a leaky gut! In addition, 70-80% of your serotonin, the "happy" molecule that balances our mood, is made in the gut. If the gut becomes damaged, then we may see depression, anxiety and mood disorders begin! Who would have though that depression may start in your stomach!

For a great article on serotonin and gut health, click the link below:

https://amymyersmd.com/article/serotonin-gut-health

This is why it is essential to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables everyday, to give your body the nutrients needed to maintain gut health and to feed the "good bacteria" the fuel that it needs to do its job protecting you. When leaky gut is present, it is important to consider adding a probiotic into your supplement regimen to put back those healthy organisms into you gastrointestinal tract. The types of bacteria do vary by region- i.e., they are different in the stomach, from the small intestine and large intestine. At Freedom Health Shop, we now have a Gut Health Test, made by Thorne, which can help you determine which probiotic is best for you. With this home test, you submit a sample and send it into Thorne, and they will analyze your stool and give you a comprehensive guide and how to correct your gut.

Probiotics are measures in Colony Forming Units (CFU). Most probiotics have between 10-100CFU. Some probiotics need to be refrigerated to maintain viability, but not all require refrigeration. Because they contain live strains, they usually have a short shelf life. Taking a probiotic daily helps support gut health, immunity and helps maintain our mood.

At Freedom Health Shop, we carry several different types of probiotics, including our Private Label FHS Gut Health. Use the search bar or our drop down menu to find which one is best for you, or feel free to email us at info@freedomhealthshop.com and we will work with you to find the best one for you!

We also carry a new Gut Health Test by Thorne. After purchasing the kit, you activate the kit on Thorne's website and send in a sample using the items in the kit. Your sample will be analyzed and medical professionals will analyze it and determine your gut bugs and come up with a probiotic plan specific for your body. Aging Gracefully

As we age, many changes happen in the body.  From decreased hormone levels which may affect our hair, our brains, and skin to but also changes in muscle mass may affect how our body responds to insulin after a sugar load. In addition, we may experience bone loss, which can set us up for falls, bone fractures.

Maintaining muscle mass, is a key to longevity. Not only does it help burn more calories, since muscle burns more calories that fat, but also it helps our body respond better to insulin. By maintaining our muscle mass, we also strengthen the muscles which can help prevent falls. Remaining active is key to longevity.

Teas for Gut Health

Gut health is super important to your overall health status. The gastro intestinal tract is your first line of defense, as 70-80% of your immune system lies beneath your gut wall. Did you know that your gut lining is only 1 cell layer thick? That means any disruptions in gut function, can affect your overall immune status.

Below is a link from Thorne Research on the use of teas in supporting gut health. Drinking tea is an in-expensive way to incorporate good health every day. Ditch the coffee and start drinking tea. Your body will thank you!

 N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) and It's Benefits

What is NAC?

N-Acetyl- Cysteine is the synthetic form of the amino acid cysteine. Your body has the ability to produce cysteine from other amino acids, but the majority comes from the foods that we eat. Cysteine can be found in lean pork chops, beef skirt steak, lean chicken breast, tuna, lentils, oatmeal, eggs, low fat yogurt, sunflower seeds, swiss cheese and many more foods.

NAC has many medical uses in the hospital, from breaking up respiratory secretions to liver rescue from Tylenol overdose.  In supplement form, it is not approved by the FDA, so there can be no "medical claims" for its use, although it is used for liver support and detoxification processes.

The importance of NAC is that it is a precursor to glutathione, and helps increase the amount of glutathione in the body. (See previous article about glutathione listed above.) Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant, and can be made when NAC bonds with glutamine and glycine, two other amino acids. Glutathione is important in:

  • Regulating cellular activity
  • Keeping the immune system in check
  • Neutralizing free radicals that can damage cells and tissues.

The thought with integrative practitioners, is that because NAC can boost glutathione production, it may be useful for COPD, Covid-19, heart disease, infertility, and psychiatric disorders. Although there may not be a lot of evidence to support, some practitioners also use it in certain types of cancers, hepatitis, kidney disease, lupus and more. NAC may also help support a healthy inflammatory repsonse.

A great article explaining NAC is in the link below:

https://veryhealth.com/the-benefits-of-n-acetylcysteine-89416

NAC has been on the market for decades, but the FDA is threatening to make it prescription. Some say that the NAC prescription type drugs may be coming to market, so they may be trying to remove any supplements with NAC in it. It has also been used as supportive therapy in CV-19, so there is a reason that the "powers that be" would like to regulate this supplement.

To find our why NAC is coming under fire, click the links below:

https://anh-usa.org/why-the-fda-is-attacking-nac-supplements/

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/6164/3512/files/fdas-draft-guidance-on-nac-pdf.pdf?v=1654549549

Many supplements also pair NAC with Milk Thistle, which helps the liver's detoxification and inflammatory processes.

Another great article by Dr. Mercola, explaining NAC and glutathione:

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/6164/3512/files/NAC_GlutathioneDrMercola.pdf?v=1654549172

NAC is one of the most important amino acids for your body. At Freedom Health Shop we carry NAC products by itself, or paired with other vitamins. Use the search function, and check out all of our NAC items!

Health Benefits of Sauna Therapy

Good health consists of multiple factors. It comes not only from good nutrition, exercise, good sleep habits and supplementation. Other forms of "alternative health" devices are also important in overall health. One of those items is sauna therapy.

Sauna's history began in Finland over 2000 years ago The word "sauna" means "Bath House" in Finnish and is an important part of Finnish culture. Saunas are a gathering place for family and friends, a place to relax and de-compress. Finnish mothers even use to give birth in saunas! Other cultures, such as the Romans and Greeks, Turkish, Mexicans, and Native Americans also used saunas or sweat lodges to help relax and unwind.

Saunas have many health benefits including:

  • Rid body of toxins
  • Improve heart health
  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • May lengthen lifespan
  • May reduce memory loss
  • Benefits your skin

Fast forward to today, when we had traditional saunas (electric or wood) and infrared (IR) saunas? What are the differences and which is better? Traditional saunas typically run at higher temperatures- up to 160-200 degrees. IR saunas use lower heat, typically 115-140 degrees. Both types can emit electromagnetic frequencies (EMF). The advantages of IR  saunas over traditional saunas is that the heat penetrates tissue better, some models have lower EMF, and expense.

For some great articles on saunas and their comparisons, please click the links below:

You should discuss sauna therapy and any supplements that you take with your health care provider before beginning therapy.

At Freedom Health Shop we are proud to partner with Synergy Science, the maker of a portable sauna with very low EMF. Please go to our "Affiliate" link, and then go to the Synergy Science page. At the bottom of the page is a link, which will take you to all of their products, including infrared saunas and home hydrogen water systems.

Nutrients for Eye Health

Eyes are one of the most important organs of our body, and probably the most important of the most 5 senses. Without sight, we would not be able to see our loved ones, colors of flowers, drive, ride a bike, scuba dive, and run unassisted, plus a whole host of other activities. Our eyes are resilient and over the years can can be subjected to allergic reactions, infections, dry eyes, cataracts, and styes. Most of these can be overcome with eye care or antibiotics, but as we age, some of the common eye diseases include:

  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Dry Eye Disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular Degeneration

Some of these can be inherited disorders, but nutrition does play a major role in eye health. With poor nutrition, and lack of vitamins and minerals, our eyes can suffer and this is why supplementing with the correct vitamins and minerals becomes more important as we age.

Some the most beneficial nutrients include:

  • Vitamin A- Without enough of this vitamin, you can experience night blindness, dry eyes and possibly blindness. Found in liver, egg yolks, and dairy products.
  • Lutein & Zedaxanthin- These functions as a natural sunblock and plays a role in protecting the eyes from blue light. Found in spinach, swiss chard, kale, parsley, pistachios, green peas, egg yolks, sweet corn and red grapes.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids- EPA/DHA are important for retinal eye health. The best source is oily fish, like sardines, Atlantic or Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, white tuna. Non-fish sources include flaxseed and walnuts.
  • Gamma-Linolenic Acid- An omega-6 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory properties. Found in primrose oil and starflower oil.
  • Vitamin C- An antioxidant needed in higher amounts than most organs. Can be found in bell peppers, citrus fruits, guava, kale and broccoli.
  • Vitamin E- A fat soluble antioxidant with the role of protecting fatty acids from harmful oxidation. Found in almonds, sunflower seeds, and flaxseed oils.
  • Zinc- Needed for many enzymatic functions, including superoxide dismutase, which functions as an antioxidant. Lack of this trace mineral may lead to night blindess. Found in oysters, meat, pumkin seeds and peanuts.

A great short article about these vitamins can be found in the link below:

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/8-nutrients-for-eyes#TOC_TITLE_HDR_10

 Elderberry- A Wonder "Drug?"

Elderberry is one the best remedies to support the immune system, and it widely used in treating cold and flu symptoms. There are over 30 different types of elder plants, but the version known as Sambucus Nigra, known as the European elderberry or black elder, is the version used for healing. Elderberry is considered one the most healing plants, so much so, that Hippocrates called the elder tree his "medicine chest." You can find it in pills, teas, gummies, and lozenges. If eating berries, it is important to cook first, since uncooked or unripe berries can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Large amounts can cause more serious poisoning. In folk medicine, the dried berries or juice are used to treat influenza, infections, sciatica, headaches, dental pain, nerve pain, as well asa laxative and diuretic.

Other parts of the elder tree such as twigs, roots, leaves, branches and seeds are toxic if ingested. Historically, the leaves have been been used topically for pain relief, swelling and inflammation.

Elderberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that help boost the immune system, and is used for:

  • Immune Booster- for flu and cold symptoms
  • Inflammation
  • Stress
  • Heart Protective
  • Joint & muscle Pain
  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Minor Skin Issues
  • Kidney Issues- has diuretic properties

Elderberry also has many nutritional benefit including:

  • High in Vitamin C- 52mg of Vitamin C per cup
  • High in dietary fiber- 10 grams of fiber per cup
  • Good source of phenolic acid- helps reduce oxidative stress
  • Good source of flavonoids- includes quercetin, kaempferol and isofhamnetin.
  • Rich in anthocyanins- these compounds give the berries their dark black-purple color with strong antioxidant and inflammatory effects.

Avoid taking if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Discontinue if you have allergic reaction, such as a rash or trouble breathing.

At Freedom Health Shop we carry several products containing elderberry. Just use the search function and type in "elderberry" to see the list of products that we carry. This is a must have item for your cold and flu kits!

Sulfur and Why it is Important

Sulfur is the 16th element on the periodic table, but did you know that it is important to your overall health? To run efficiently, your body needs sulfur for the following:

    • Metabolism
    • Synthesis of glutathione
    • Joint healing
    • Sulfonation of hormones
    • Synthesis of connective tissue, such as tendons and cartilage
    • Detoxification pathways
    • Liver health

Sulfur can be found in the following foods:

    • Leafy greens
    • Cruciferous vegetables
    • Garlic and onoins
    • Seafood
    • Grass Fed Beef
    • Organic Pastured eggs
    • Bone Broth

Sulfur is needed to metabolize and excrete drugs such as acetaminophen. This is why one of the treatments for acetaminophen overdose is N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)  (in IV form). It is also in many detoxification cleanses, because it helps support the liver.

If you can't get enough sulfur in your diet, then supplementing with NAC tablets can help to boost your glutathione levels. Is is important to have adequate levels of sulfur, because deficiencies can exacerbate obesity, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, alzheimer's and autism.

For a great article by Dr.Mercola, explaining sulfur in more detail, click the link below:

Magnesium- What is It and What is the Best Magnesium to Take?

Magnesium is an abundant mineral found throughout the body, that is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions. Magnesium is involved in:

    • Neuromusclar contractions
    • Muscle relaxation
    • Sleep
    • Cardiac function
    • Acid-Base balance
    • Metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and fats
    • Cofactor for enzymes involved in cellular energy production
    • Helps utilize calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium
    • Helps utilized B complex vitamins, Vitamin C and Vitamin E
    • Needed for heart health, brain health, and blood vessel dilation
    • Involved in bronchial relaxation
    • Supports a healthy blood sugar level

Not having a healthy magnesium level can cause many health issues. According to the NIH, "early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms, and coronary spasms can occur  Severe magnesium deficiency can result in hypocalcemia or hypokalemia (low serum calcium or potassium levels, respectively) because mineral homeostasis is disrupted ."

Here is a useful article from the NIH regarding magnesium:

    https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Magnesium-healthProfessional/

Here is a great article by Dr. Joseph Mercola about the FDA acknowledging magnesium's use in regulating blood pressure:

    https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/6164/3512/files/Mag_BP.pdf?v=1645053335

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for magnesium is anywhere from 310 mg to 420 depending on gender and your age. Some healthcare practitioners do use higher doses, but exceeding the RDA, should only be done in conjunction with your healthcare provider.

Here is another great article from Michelle Lauer, CNP in a Fullscript article from Nov 22, 2021, explaining the "Top 7 Benefits of Magnesium"

    https://fullscript.com/blog/benefits-of-magnesium?utm_source=email&utm_medium=p_atientcomm&utm_campaign=nov-23-2021&mkt_tok=ODE0LUhRWC0xMDAAAAGA7KTzLWXLDzzAKY0iyEfUpg2__SVMjgiDUj-toOL7QkliZT5tuBNn-tFdF6TkHy1HdEfr-rNChQR-8KocldyqKXS114YYYHWa-Xxzd7s

A great new articles by Dr.Joseph Mercola on the effects of low magnesium on the heart, brain, liver, kidneys, vitamin D absorption and more!

    https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/6164/3512/files/health-benefits-of-magnesium-pdf.pdf?v=1658873323

And another great article about pairing Vitamin B6 and Magnesium:

    https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/6164/3512/files/magnesium-and-vitamin-b6-pdf.pdf?v=1654542837

Now that we know why magnesium is so important, how do we know which one to take?  The common salt forms of magnesium are:

    • Magnesium Oxide
    • Magnesium Chloride
    • Magnesium Sulfate
    • Magnesium Glycinate (or bis-glycenate)
    • Magnesium L-Theonate
    • Magnesium Malate

Another useful form of magnesium is Epsom salts. Made with magnesium sulfate, magnesium can be absorbed through the skin. Just add the epsom salts to a hot bath-It's a great way relax and soak in the tub at the end of a hard day or after exercise, as it does help to relax the muscles and promote sleep.

If you are taking oral magnesium supplements like malate, citrate, glycinate and oxide it is important to follow recommended daily doses. Too much magnesium can cause diarrhea and can be a problem in those with kidney dysfunction. Pregnant and nursing mothers should also consult with their doctors before using magnesium.

Here is a great chart outlining which type of magnesium is best to take, depending on what you are tying to treat. (Unfortunately, I no longer have the reference from where this was taken, but decided to post, since it is useful information.)

    Co-Enzyme Q10
    by Metagenics

    CoQ10 101

    An antioxidant introduction

In the world of antioxidants, coenzyme Q10, otherwise known as CoQ10, stands out as a key player in optimizing human health. It’s one of the most significant lipid antioxidants that helps prevent free radical generation and subsequent modification of proteins, lipids, and DNA.1 Naturally produced in the body,2 CoQ10 is a fat-soluble enzyme,1 and the highest levels in humans are found in the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.3

    The history of CoQ10

CoQ10, a type of the coenzyme Q group, was first identified in 1940 and known under various names such as ubidecarenone, ubiquinone, ubiquinol, and vitamin Q10. In 1957, CoQ10 was isolated from mitochondria of the beef heart. Although there are several types of coenzyme Q, the most common type of coenzyme Q in human mitochondria is CoQ10. CoQ10 is also found in meat and fatty fish and in smaller quantities within whole grains, nuts, and vegetables.1

    The basics

CoQ10 plays a significant role in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and is critical for the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is necessary for energy transport throughout the body as well as supporting the cardiovascular system overall. 1,2

While the body naturally produces CoQ10, this ability to make CoQ10 peaks around 20 years of age and decreases with age.1 Some studies suggest certain health conditions may reduce CoQ10 levels in the body.1,4

    CoQ10 applications

CoQ10 has many well-researched benefits and plays an important role in many body functions:1

    • It is a naturally occurring substance that is essential for energy production and is of particular importance in the maintenance of cardiovascular health.
    • May be a valuable nutritional adjunct for cardiovascular support.
    • It has a variety of antioxidative activities.
    • Is crucial for cellular energy production by supporting mitochondrial function.

Use of CoQ10 should be taken with the knowledge and guidance of a healthcare practitioner to avoid any potential adverse interactions with existing medications.

    Zinc and Immune Function

Zinc is a trace mineral that is found in poultry, red meat and fish. The body does not store excess zinc, so it needs to be consumed through the diet. Having enough zinc in your diet is important for wound healing, blood clotting, thyroid function and immune function. Most people don't acquire enough zinc in their diet, therefore, supplementation helps to maintain adequate levels.

Check out the article below from Metagenics Institute to learn about the importance of Zinc in your overall health.

Zinc supplementation decreases incidence of COVID-19 infection
    Contributed by Kathi Head, ND

A single-blind study of the potential of zinc supplementation to decrease the risk for contracting COVID-19 was conducted in two clinics in south Florida. After exclusions and dropouts, 104 participants from a clinic that routinely prescribes zinc for COVID prevention were paired with 96 participants from a second clinic who were not routinely prescribed zinc. For ethical reasons, participants in the latter clinic who wanted to participate in the zinc group could do so. Participants were ages 50-84; exclusion criteria included current infection or antibodies indicating a previous COVID infection.

The study began on August 3, 2020, and ended on January 15, 2021 – for the most part prior to the availability of a vaccine. Patients in the non-zinc group were matched for demographics, presence of co-morbidities, and serum vitamin D level. Because of the demographics of the community involved, 90 percent of the participants were Hispanic. Although the participants knew whether or not they were taking zinc, those in the zinc group were randomly assigned to 10 mg (n=31), 25 mg (n=41), or 50 mg (n=32) of elemental zinc (as picolinate) daily and were blinded as to the dose they were taking.

Zinc supplementation resulted in significantly fewer COVID infections compared to the no-zinc group, even though the treatment group participants were an average of three years older and had 15-percent more participants who had COPD. Two participants (1.92%) in the zinc group had symptomatic COVID infections compared to nine participants (10.42%) in the no-zinc group. The two in the zinc group had mild symptoms managed via out-patient telemedicine consult. In addition, antibody tests at the study’s end showed none of the other participants in the zinc group had had asymptomatic COVID. Of the nine COVID cases in the no-zinc group, three required hospitalization for severe hypoxia and one of them died. There were no significant differences in zinc dosing, with no cases in the 10-mg daily group and one each in the 25- and 50-mg daily groups. This study adds to the growing body of evidence for using zinc as a prophylactic in COVID-19.

     MELATONIN

Most of you have heard of melatonin and its use to help promote sleep. But did you know that it also helps reduce COVID-19 Mortality?  Check out this article written by Dr. Joseph Mercola:

    Melatonin Significantly reduces Covid-19 Mortality
    Analysis of Joseph Mercola

    STORY-AT-A-GLANCE

    • While most well-known as a natural sleep regulator, melatonin also has many other important functions. It boots immune function, helps recharge glutathione and may improve treatment of certain bacterial diseases; it has anticonvulsant and antiexcitotoxic properties, and is a potent antioxidant with the rare ability to enter your mitochondria.
    • In viral infections, melatonin lowers the overreaction of the host cells to the pathogen, thereby raising the host's tolerance to the virus. This gives the host time to develop the adaptive immune response and eradicate the invading pathogen.
    • Melatonin attenuates several pathological features of COVD-19, including excessive oxidative stress and inflammation, exaggerated immune response resulting in a cytokine storm, acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
    • An October 221 study found melatonin significantly lowered mortality when given to severely infected COVID patients. In the standard care only group, 13 of he 76 patients dies (17.1%), compared to just one of the 82 patients (1.2%) who received melatonin in addition to standard care- a reduction in mortality of 93%.
    • During the second week of infection, a time when severely infected patients can take a drastic turn for the worse, the melatonin group fared much better than the standard care only group, with only two patients developing sepsis, compared to eight in the standard care only group.

    Colloidal Silver and It's Uses
    by Freedom Health Shop

Have you ever heard of Colloidal Silver? Silver has been around for centuries and has been used medicinally over the years. It was used as a natural antibiotic until the 1940’s when modern antibiotics were developed. Colloidal silver is a solution of tiny particles suspended in a liquid base. It can be used orally, sprayed on skin or in the nose or mouth, or used as eye drops, lotions, soaps and mouthwashes.

While researches debate the efficacy of colloidal silver, people have found that colloidal silver has potent antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties and has been useful for different types of health issues. Many alternative and integrative practitioners believe and use colloidal silver for its health benefits from supporting immune function and preventing infections. Some of the conditions colloidal silver is used for are:

    • Wound healing- Used to heal skin in minor burns, ulcers, bedsores

Oryan A, Alemzadeh E, Tashkhourian J, Nami Ana SF. Topical delivery of chitosan-capped silver nanoparticles speeds up healing in burn wounds: a preclinical studyCarbohydr Polym. 2018;200:82-92. doi:10.1016/j.carbpol.2018.07.077

Used short term, products containing silver may be useful in treating skin infection and ulcers.

    • Flu and Infection Prevention

Some Studies show that colloidal silver may have properties that help fight against bacteria, viruses, fungi and inflammation. These were test tube studies, not done in humans; however, it does show promise and needs to be explored further.

Caution: The FDA does not consider colloidal silver to be effective or safe for use. It may buildup in the tissues and vital organs over a period of months or years.

    Possible Drug Interactions

Colloidal silver can interact with several medications. It can either make them less effective, increase their side effects, or weaken liver function as your body metabolizes the drug. Discuss with your healthcare provider if you are taking any of the following medications:

    • Antiarrhythmic drugs like Cordarone (amiodarone)
    • Antifungals like Diflucan (fluconazole) and Sporanox (itraconazole)

Seven Reason to Know Your Vitamin D Level
    by Jacqueline Jacques
    THORNE Research

Vitamin D is one of the most important hormones (it technically is not a vitamin) that our body needs for optimal efficiency.

Do you take Vitamin D supplements? If so, do you know your Vitamin D level? Knowing your Vitamin D level is important because most people in the Northern hemisphere are Vitamin D deficient. Also, with Covid, you may need higher levels, so it is important to not be sub-therapeutic.

The body has the ability to be make Vitamin D into its active form when the skin is exposed to sunlight, but it usually takes supplementation to achieve therapeutic levels. Unlike Vitamin C, Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, therefore, it is stored in the fat. Having too much or too little can be problematic, so it's important to know your level.

Check out the following articles from THORNE Research about why knowing your Vitamin D level is important!

Dandelion Leaf Extract Blocks Spike Proteins from Binding to the ACE2 Cell Surface Receptor- Research

    by Lance D.. Johnson
The New Zeland Journal of Natural Medicine, Issue 42

    STORY-AT-A-GLANCE

Check out the exciting article below from the New Zealand Journal of Natural Medicine from a German university study showing dandelion's affect on blocking spike proteins from binding to the ACE2 cell surface receptor. A water based dandelion extract taken from the leaves were exposed to HEK293-hACE2 kidney and A549-hACE2-TMPRSS2 lung cells. They found that dandelion blocked the protein-to-protein interactions between the S1 subunit of the spike protein and the human ACE2 cell surface receptor.

    Quercetin and Immune Health
by Lewis Chang, PhD @Metagenics Institute

    STORY-AT-A-GLANCE

Quercetin is all the buzz right now. Let's answer a few questions about this amazing flavonoid:

    • What is Quercetin?
    • Where is it from?
    • What biological properties does it have?

    https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/6164/3512/files/QuercetinMetagenic.pdf?v=1641242810

Here is a new update courtesy of Thorne Research regarding Quercetin and CV 19 s of Feb 28. 2022:

Quercetin- An Alternative to Hydroxychloroqine, and More
    Analysis by Dr. Jospeh Mercola

    STORY-AT-A-GLANCE

    • Quercetin works much like hydroxychloroquine, a drug found to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 when used early enough. Both are zinc ionophores, meaning they shuttle antiviral zinc into your cells.
    • The Front Line Critical COVID-19 Care Alliances's early treatment protocol includes quercetin at a dose of 250mg twice a day. in combination with 100mg elemental zinc and 500mg to 1,000mg of vitamin C twice a day.
    • Quercetin also has other mechanisms of action that make it useful in the fight against COVID-19. For example, it may inhibit SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to ACE2 receptor docking. By binding to the ACE-2 receptor and the spike protein interface, quercetin inhibits viral attachment and entry into the cell.
    • Quercetin also modulates NLRP3 inflammasome, an immune system component involved in the uncontrolled release of pro-inflammatory cytokines that occurs during a cytokine storm.
    • Quercetin-rich foods include onions, shallots, apples, broccoli, asparagus, green peppers, red leaf lettuce, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, black currants and green tea.
